10 Resolutions for a Healthy New Year

Posted by whatsapp status on December 26, 2013 with No comments
Hi friends! How were your holidays?  Very good here.  I did a recap of our Christmas day celebration on Honey We're Home if you want to take a peek.  Healthwise, I'm proud to say that I stuck to a good workout routine that definitely helped me not feel too bad about enjoying all the extra food I ate in the last couple of weeks.  I am ready to kick off the new year strong and was thinking about things we can do daily to change our health for the better today.

I'm not talking about general goals like, "lose weight", I'm talking specific actions that you can incorporate into your daily routine that hopefully become a habit and add up to some pretty big changes at the end of 2014.

1. Control Portion Sizes  Sometimes we eat too much just because the sizes served to us in restaurants are so big that we forget what a realistic portion size looks like.   Drink sizes are huge, refrigerators are huge.  Have you looked at a fridge from the 50s and laughed at how tiny it compares to today's varieties?  Instead of eating straight from a bag or box (because it's hard to tell how much you're consuming), portion out your snacks into baggies or small tupperware.  Use smaller plates and understand that most portion sizes are about the size of your fist.

2.  Don't Go Hungry  If you wait until you're starving to eat, chances are your food choices will be poor and you will overeat.  By balancing your meals and snacks evenly throughout the day, you are more likely to eat better and stay fuller longer.  Bring healthy snacks to work or keep them in your purse.  Things like nuts and apples don't need to be refrigerated, but if you have access to a fridge, you can bring cold snacks like cheese or Greek yogurt.

3.  Quit Smoking  Period.  We all know by now it's terrible for our health.  I've never smoked so I cannot say I understand the addiction or how hard it is to quit.  I do know that your family members probably wish you would quit because they want you alive and healthy for a long time.  I tell this to my parents all the time.  I have several friends who quit using acupuncture and/or hypnosis.

4.  Get More Sleep  Stress and lack of sleep are so hard on a body physically.  Do what you can to wind down at night, so you can get the rest you need.  Getting off the computer, cell phone and turning down the lights can help get you ready for bed.  Sometimes I'll just get in bed before I'm ready to go to sleep, intending to read, then quickly fall asleep not realizing how tired I actually am.

5.  Eat Breakfast My quick go-to breakfasts are oatmeal, toast with peanut butter, or Greek yogurt with granola.  My friend makes a protein smoothie for breakfast.  Whatever it is, it's good to get your metabolism going and start your day with calories and energy.

6.  Eat More Veggies  Incorporating vegetables into our diet is important because they contain essential vitamins and minerals that offer protection against many diseases like cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.  Try switching out one meal a week for a salad loaded with veggies or add a vegetable to one of your daily meals.  I like to snack on a handful of mini carrots or celery and peanut butter.  Baked Kale chips are awesome.  Edamame is delicious.  A veggie omelet is a good way to incorporate more vegetables and you can always toss some spinach into a smoothie.

7.  Slash Sodium The recommended limit of sodium is a teaspoon (or 6 grams) daily. Besides contributing to water retention (i.e. bloating), sodium can raise blood pressure. Processed foods contain the most, so make sure to read labels. Lower sodium diets are linked to decreased risk of heart disease, but are also associated with lower hypertension and weight management.  via Reader's Digest

8.  Cut Out Soft Drinks  Soda, soft drinks, pop (whatever you call it) has no nutritional value and can pack on the pounds.  Giving up these drinks (without doing anything else) can reap great rewards in terms of weight loss.  I read at FitDay that estimates show that two cans of soda per day adds approximately 24 to 35 pounds of fat per year, depending on body size, age, habits, etc.. Some people (weighing in at 140 pounds) have reported that by giving up two cans of soda per day, without exercise, they lost 20 pounds in six months.

9.  Drink More Water We talked about drinking water recently and how much is enough.    Ladies Home Journal found the benefits are: 1) younger looking skin and better complexion by staying hydrated; 2) helps lose weight by keeping you feeling satiated; and 3) boosts mood and brain power.

10.  Get Active Even 10 to 30 physical activity has positive benefits like weight loss, improved mood and energy,  and better sleep.  The easiest way I've found to to incorporate exercise is by walking more.  It costs nothing and you can do it anywhere.  I park far away from the door at stores and take the stairs when possible.  If your weather permits right now, just open the door and walk around the block a few times.  Once you start this habit, it will feel so good that you'll crave more.  Even if it's difficult at first, the payoff is worth it and it gets easier!

Here's to a HEALTHY and FIT 2014!

Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday Jesus

Posted by whatsapp status on December 25, 2013 with No comments
Today we get to celebrate Jesus birth.  Christmas is definitely the most special day to a follower of Christ.  If it wasn't for Jesus' birth we would have no hope, love peace or joy.  I can't imagine my life without our Lord and Saviour.
I was fortunate to have been raised in a Christ centered home, so I don't know what life would be like without my friend. What I do know is that, I wouldn't want it any other way.  I often wonder what people do when life gets hard and they have no one to which to turn?

Dan had I have had our difficulties, there has been some depression, financial struggles, the struggle to get pregnant, loss of friends, change in career etc.  Some of these struggles lasted years but there was never a doubt that we wouldn't be carried out of these periods.  Our prayers were answered in ways and we were blessed even more than we could have imagined.  We have two absolutely beautiful girls, a warm home to live in, healthy families, jobs which pay more than just our bills and so much more.  I know where these blessings have come from.

Jesus was given to us as a gift.  A gift which came on Christmas so many years ago but is available to anyone at anytime.  What a blessing I have found in my Lord.  Thank you for your friendship Jesus.  Happy Birthday!

Monster Oatmeal Cookies (Dairy, Gluten with Egg Free Option)

Posted by whatsapp status on December 20, 2013 with No comments
My mom used to make these when we were kids.  They were always a hit, who doesn't like peanut butter and chocolate?  I don't often make cookies from oats as I do find them hard to digest.  If you have a severe gluten intolerance oats are often difficult on the digestive tract.  Today's advent calender activity was to make something for your neighbour.  I made a few adaptations to my mother's recipe and thought I would share it.  I would like to try this with a combination of ground almonds.

Ingredients (makes 24 cookies)
  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil or earth balance
  • 1 cup peanut or sunflower butter
  • 1/4 cup ground flax seeds soaked in 1/2 cup water for 5 minutes or 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup coconut or palm sugar
  • 1 teaspoon gluten free vanilla
  • 3 1/2 cups gluten free rolled oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips (optional)
  • dye free candies for decoration (optional)

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  2. Warm peanut butter and butter.
  3. In a mixing bowl add peanut butter mixture, flax seeds, palm sugar, vanilla, oats, baking soda and chocolate chips.
  4. Spoon cookie dough onto cookie sheet.  Add candies for decoration if desired.
  5. Bake 10-12 minutes and cool on a wire rack.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Posted by whatsapp status on December 19, 2013 with No comments

I wanted to take the time to wish all of YOU a very Merry Christmas and an upcoming safe and Happy New Year.  WOW…can you believe how the time has gone by in a blink?  Life truly is like that you know and it is so important to cherish every moment, and really take in the meaning of things.  We get so caught up in busy, busy, busy, that even relaxing has become a stressful event…WHAT???

Believe me, I used to be one of those busy people who felt that time was utilized for work and if I was not doing something productive every minute then I was wasting valuable time.  This can really create a self- inflicted guilt trip that dares a person to even place their backside on the sofa for a minute…back then, it caused too much anxiety.  So, I buzzed around like a bee all the time and I did not realize how much of life I was missing.  I was too busy trying to make a living and not make a life. I truly thank God for my older, wiser, better self who has slowed the pace of my life down to a healthy balance and I can now see the world and everything all around me with much more clarity for many years now.  It is absolutely awesome to take deep full breathes and not feel on edge about this and that, and let go of thing that really do not matter in the big scheme of life.

Lately, my husband and I have been surrounded by people in crisis through illness, death, and job loss.  Our hearts have been touched, pained, and our knees bent in prayer for those that we care about.  It is times like these that life does not make sense, and even can provide a fear and a desperate cry for protection of our lives, relationship, finances, and all things meaningful in this life.  There is no amount of money that replaces a person, and that is when it is realized that all that busyness is for nothing.  It is so important to have a heart of gratitude, and thankfulness because there are people out there who are praying for the very things that I/you/we have that are taken for granted.  I know this sounds like heavy stuff, but it really is just a share of how important it is to realize how important life is…it is truly a GIFT and there are no guarantees of how long the gift of being here will last.  I do know that taking care of this gift of life is what I am supposed to do, and taking care of my physical, nutritional, emotional and spiritual health are all a part of that plan.  That is what I share with you here on the Blog…ME to MOTIVATE you, and if I have touched one person, inspired, encouraged, or helped in some way to better the quality of life for someone…then I have accomplished my goal.

As I sit here typing my thoughts to you, I wonder what you are thinking, feeling, and how your life is going?  Are you caught up in “too busy” and not making time to take care of you, missing out on family and friend opportunities, not making a call to that person that has been on your mind, and other meaningful things that you think about  but are pushed aside each day because that busy voice keeps taking over? We never want to be in a position of regret and saying, I wish I would have done this or that, because at that moment it is too late.  Life is about taking those important things and doing them now.  Tossing the “too busy card” is a necessity to have a healthy life and that is really what this post is about.

I understand the importance of work, but we all have the ability to create a healthy balance of life through choices, changes of priority, and our overall mindset of what we think and feel about life.  My wish and gift to all of you this Christmas, is that you all step back and really allow yourself to relax and get into the moment, develop a heart of gratitude, see with the eyes of a child and play with such freedom of non-care that it is contagious, laugh until your belly hurts, and be REAL in your sharing with your spouse, family and friends.  Adapt such a balanced, healthy lifestyle that everyone will be asking YOU what you are doing to get healthy, because it all starts between the ears and shines through with your actions.  Take good care and Merry Christmas!

Dutch Poffertjes (Dairy, Gluten and Refined Sugar Free)

Posted by whatsapp status on December 17, 2013 with No comments
Our oldest daughter just finished a family tree project for school.  Throughout her planning, we had a lot of conversations about our heritage.  My husband's family is Canadian with a few generations back coming from England.  I was born in the Netherlands, so oldest has figured out she is half Canadian and half Dutch. My youngest for some reason has told us she is French.  We are not quite sure how that works, but she is convinced of this.  Not sure if that is from Quebec or France ;)
Having all of my extended relatives still in the Netherlands we have gone for several visits.  A few years ago, we took the girls and for the first time our oldest experienced "poffertjes." She enjoyed them at a restaurant associated with a local castle so ever since then, we call them princess poffertjes.  For those who are unfamiliar, poffertjes are simply little pancakes, traditionally made with yeast and fried in a special pan.  My mother and sister have both since purchased a cast iron poffertje pan which they are willing to share. Poffertjes are traditionally served with powdered sugar and syrup.  Since we are part Canadian, we use pure maple syrup ;)

Ingredients
  • 1/3 cup buckwheat flour
  • 1/4 chickpea flour
  • 1/2 cup tapioca or arrowroot starch
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon gluten free vanilla
  • 3 eggs separated
  • 3/4 cup non dairy milk
  • 1/2 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 tablespoon grapeseed oil, extra for frying
  • 5 drops liquid stevia

Directions

  1. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  2. If using a cast iron pan, turn it onto a medium heat so it will be ready for the prepared batter.
  3. In a one cup bowl add milk and apple cider vinegar.
  4. In a medium size bowl combine buckwheat flour, chickpea flour, starch, sea salt, baking soda, baking and baking powder.
  5. Add eggs, milk, oil and stevia stirring to fully combine.
  6. Gently fold in egg whites into the rest of the batter.
  7. Spoon or use a squeeze bottle to pour batter into prepared poffertje pan.

Benefits of Raw Chocolate and a Raw Cherry Chocolate Kale Smoothie (Dairy, Gluten,Grain and Sugar Free)

Posted by whatsapp status on December 12, 2013 with No comments
Chocolate has amazing health benefits.  Unfortunately most of these benefits only come from raw chocolate or cocao.  Cacao is very high in iron and magnesium. Magnesium is essential in bone growth, blood pressure as well as relieving depression and migraines. Magnesium can also relieve menstrual symptoms, so isn't interesting that women often crave chocolate during their cycle? Raw cocao is one of the highest sources of antioxidants, higher than blueberries and green vegetables.  Cocoa powder, found in most store bought chocolate bars, has been roasted at a high temperature, thus killing most beneficial enzymes.  Raw cocao is made by cold-pressing raw cocoa beans, therefore keeping the enzymes alive.  So, go ahead have your raw chocolate and eat it too.

One of our favourite ways to enjoy cocao is in a smoothie.  This recipe, in particular is a favourite with the combination of cherries and chocolate.
Ingredients
  • 1 banana
  • 2 handfuls kale or spinach
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 3/4 cup cherries
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cocao
  • 1 capsule probiotics (optional)
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3 drops liquid stevia (optional)

Directions
  1. Place all ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth.
  2. Serve immediately.

A Kentucky Road Trip, Wonderful People, Cleansing Tea, a Snowstorm and Fast Food?

Posted by whatsapp status on December 09, 2013 with No comments
Dan and I had the opportunity to travel to Kentucky this past weekend.  We were invited to a company Christmas party, so we took the opportunity to turn it into an extended weekend get away. My in laws were so gracious for looking after our girls for us so we could have some time on our own.

It isn't often that we get some time away together, but when we do, we both realize its importance.  I always feel like I get to see those fun qualities of his that get overlooked in the business of everyday.  Dan can be quite witty and we get in a lot of laughs.  We did a total of 18 hours of driving together and it flew by.  I loved the uninterrupted conversations and the time to just hang out as a couple.

One of the highlights of our trip was definitely meeting Dan's boss and his wife.  I think I found my American sister.  I have never met anyone with whom I have so much in common.  It was truly rewarding having someone understand and share my passion for Christ, my family and nutrition.  If only there weren't 2500 km between us.
During our visit I was given a delicious home-made tea.  I have gotten out of homemade tea making, but have since been reminded of its great taste.  This tea is simply made of dandelion, sage and lemon which is simmered in water on the stove. Dandelion is frequently used for ailments with regards to the kidneys and liver.  Lemon and Sage provide antioxidants and antibacterial properties. I highly recommend it and would love to get back into making more teas.

On another less healthy note, Dan and I took notice of some reoccurring restaurant chains we saw on the way.  There seemed to be a lot of fast food advertisements on the freeway exits in the US, so on the way home we decided to take a tally.  I know we are geeks.  We were right, with McDonald's being the most popular.  In our 8 hour drive from Cincinnati to Buffalo we saw 29 McDonald's off the freeway.
So what about Canada?  Well if you are Canadian you know that Tim Horton's is most likely the most popular.  In only a 4 hour drive from Buffalo to Kingston we saw 35 Tim Horton's off the highway.  Hmm, not sure which country offers better food, as neither are places we frequent.  Dan on the other hand was disappointed there weren't more Starbucks and I wouldn't mind some juicing places...but they didn't seem to exist.
The purpose of the trip was a Christmas party, however funny enough it was cancelled due to a snowstorm Poor Cincinnati was blasted with a good amount of snow and not enough snow plows.  To be honest, I think the cancelled party really worked in our favour, as we got to spend more time with great friends. Who doesn't like an evening of Christmas carols and a game of Settlers of Catan?

Many blessings,
Irene

Are You Drinking Enough Water?

Posted by whatsapp status on December 08, 2013 with No comments
One thing I noticed after the Thanksgiving break was that I was drinking less water because I wasn't working out and I got out of the habit of keeping my water cup full at home.  I felt like my skin was looking dull and icky, so this week, I got back on my normal water routine.

It helps so much to have a large bottle or cup that you like to drink from near you so you remember to drink water throughout the day.  I like the insulated cups the best so they don't sweat and create a puddle on your furniture.  The one pictured on my desk is from Wal-Mart and holds 20 oz. of water.  I drink about 3 of these a day, so about 60 oz. of water.

It used to be recommended that people drink 8, 8 ounce glasses of water a day = total 64 ounces.  But now, the Institute of Medicine sets general guidelines for total water intake and recommends that women consume a total of 91 ounces (that’s about 2.7 liters) per day – from all food and beverages combined. But, depending on your diet, about 25% of the water you consume comes from your food.

I've read that most healthy people get enough water in the food and liquid they take in on a regular basis, but you can gague whether you're getting enough water by if you feel thirsty or your urine is dark.

I feel better when I'm drinking water throughout the day and definitely notice a difference in my skin.

I really like these 24-Ounce Insulated Cups.  They come in a variety of colors too for a great price.  I always prefer a lid (just in case of spills) and straw.

How much water do you drink per day?  Do you use a special cup too?

I AM A GUIDE NOT A GOAL

Posted by whatsapp status on December 05, 2013 with No comments

I like that saying and it takes me back to when I was in junior high and high school.  I did not always feel the best about myself, but there was always a special motivation that came from my physical education teachers and coaches.  They made me feel accomplished, encouraged, and inspired me to do more and be more.  It was at that young age that I wanted to be like them, to be able to offer to young people that feeling of inner strength, confidence and overall happiness.  Presto...my goal in life was to be a P.E. teacher.  Of course I could not climb into their bodies and become them but imagining being them was pretty awesome in my younger years.  In my twists and turns of life, I am doing my passion on a broader spectrum than in a high school gym setting and I feel great about that.

The thing about life, mentors, and motivators is to understand the concept of guides, and yes to have goals.  The goals belong to each of us however, and admiring someone for blessing our lives in a positive way is absolutely fabulous, and even being inspired to work in a field of enjoyment, well life does not get any better.  The point I am getting to in this blog write is the importance of accepting the gift from a guide BUT having the ability to strive for our own goals and to achieve our own dreams. I am a guide and motivator for many people and I appreciate and am touched by all the wonderful feedback I receive on a daily basis. Now, I am going to get deeper here with you on this subject.  I am a guide NOT a goal, and I am speaking more about the physical appearance of Darla and what that may mean to you, how it affects you, what it makes you think about, how it motivates or not, etc.

In my early competitive days, I admired Mia Finnegan and man did I want a body like hers.  I followed all the nutrition plans and extreme workouts to make that happen...but I was not her.  Why was I not good enough at that time?  It probably did not help to be scrutinized and judged on a stage by people I did not know, who were ready with pen in hand to tear apart the body that I worked so hard to put together.  It was at that time that I realized the politics that can and do exist in competition, but putting that aside, feelings of inadequacy and lack of confidence can break a person in such circumstances.  My point again...I would never be Mia Finnegan and what a letdown, but also a light bulb moment of time to love ME for ME.  So, I do understand when guides get skewed out of position and even placed on a pedestal, but you know what, we are all just people. I am no more special than you are, and doing what I do is a passion that I want to provide as a gift of motivation for you.

If you have noticed, I am cautious and conservative about posting self-images.  When I do post "selfies", I want them to be meaningful, motivational, and touch a chord of inner strength within YOU that says...I CAN DO THIS.  With all the society pressure of wanting to look like or be someone we are not, it is even more important for guides such as me to be clear in communication of how unhealthy that is.  The purpose is to PLEASE ADAPT A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, not to cause feelings of insecurity and discouragement.  I know this is a "you can't please everyone" world and even what I am writing may come across as offensive to one and motivating to another.  I am here to motivate and celebrate living a healthy life with you and that is what I will clearly communicate.

IN YOUR FACE MOTIVATION

Healthy Beef Burritos

Posted by whatsapp status on December 04, 2013 with No comments
I've often talked about one of my go-to healthy meals, Tex Mex to go, and sometimes I mix it up and make it into a healthy beef burrito.  It's super easy and delicious!

I like to make a big batch, so I start with 2 packages of Laura's lean ground round or sirloin (4% fat).  Lean beef still has plenty of flavor, try it if you typically go with something fattier.  I'd be surprised if your family even notices the difference.

Then, I add two packages of low sodium taco seasoning and mix with 1.5 cups of water and bring it to a simmer until the meat has absorbed all the seasoning.  Meanwhile, I heat up a large can of low-fat refried beans.

For me, the key to a delicious burrito is fresh pico de gallo (salsa), which is very easy to assemble.  I make it the same way I make guacamole, just without the avocados.   Just dice up tomato, white onion, jalapeno (deseeded for milder flavor) and cilantro and toss it all together with a squeeze of lime.

When the beans are heated through and the meat is ready, I assemble my burrito on a whole wheat tortilla (that I warmed up on the stove or in the microwave) and add low-fat cheese and sour cream- just a touch.

Let me know if you try it and how you like it.

Cauliflower Casserole (Dairy and Gluten/Grain Free with Vegan Option)

Posted by whatsapp status on December 03, 2013 with No comments
Cauliflowers have been really expensive here for the last month.  According to one gentleman working the produce department, it had to do with American Thanksgiving.  Interestingly enough, last Friday they came back down to a more reasonable price, so I picked on up with some great intentions.  Alas, the week is going by and I now realized, Dan and I are actually heading on a trip in a few days and I had some produce to use before they go bad.   What better way to throw somethings together, than in a casserole.   Dan and I both really enjoyed this one, so I figured I would post it and that way I can remember how to make it again sometime;)

Ingredients
  • 1 head of cauliflower chopped into bite size pieces
  • 1 grated carrot
  • 1 grated zucchini
  • 3-4 chopped gluten and nitrite free sausages (optional)
  • 1 minced onion
  • 2 cloves minced garlic

  • 3/4 cup non dairy milk
  • 3/4 cup nutritional yeast
  • 2 tablespoons tapioca or arrowroot starch

  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • cayenne pepper (optional)
  • sea salt and pepper to taste
Topping Ingredients (optional)
  • 1/4 cup ground almonds
  • 1/4 cup ground flax seeds

Healthy Hair

Posted by whatsapp status on December 02, 2013 with No comments
About a year and a half ago, I accidentally (and stupidly) fried my hair in an effort to save money and do an at-home Keratin treatment.  The Keratin treatment was supposed to turn my naturally-a-little-frizzy hair into smooth, shiny locks.  The box clearly stated NOT to use it on bleached hair (which I have), but I thought it would be okay.  Wrong!  After you put the treatment on your hair, you are supposed to comb it through very straight.  As I started combing my hair, it starting coming out in big chunks.  I quickly washed the product out of my hair, but the damage was done.  It continued to break for months after that, I had to chop it, and I've been working on growing it back out, healthy, ever since.

Of course, it looked nice chopped when it was just styled from my awesome hairdresser.  But, I have a major cowlick and could never get it to stay side swept like that.  I really don't mind the shorter length, I  just want it to be healthy!

Now, I try to wash it every other day (I can't go more than that with workouts) and only dry it with a hairdryer or use a curling iron on the first day, trying to let it air-dry as much as possible.  Then I might put it up in a top knot the next day.

I use Kerastase oil (just on the "pony tail" so it doesn't get weighed down) and I think it's been working miracles.  It's the green one for damaged hair.  I was surprised to see that Amazon sells it- I used to have to wait until I had a hair appointment at the salon.

I only use it a couple times a week and a tiny bit goes a long way. It makes your hair really sleek and shiny, taking out the frizz too.  It also smells divine.  I love the Kerastase shampoo and conditioner too, but it's expensive so I don't always buy it.

I wanted to ask y'all about Biotin supplements.  I read that Biotin is often recommended for strengthening hair and nails, though scientific data supporting this outcome are weak. Nevertheless, biotin is found in many cosmetics and health products for the hair and skin.  I found this brand on Amazon and it had a lot of great reviews, but I was wondering what you think or if you've tried it.

Let me know!

Protein IQ

Posted by whatsapp status on December 01, 2013 with No comments
How was your Thanksgiving?  I was home the whole week with my son and we also had house guests, so I didn't get in any exercise.  My body is craving a good workout, so this week it's back at it!  I can hardly believe we're in December already and it's just 3 weeks until Christmas!  Let's make these 3 weeks count so we can finish the year strong.  And so we don't add on additional weight that we have to work to lose in the new year.  You with me?

If you can't make it to the gym and/or just don't have time to workout, you can still accomplish so much by watching what you eat.  I love this visual example of how much protein, veggies, and starches should be on our plates.

And this list of proteins is pretty helpful too.  I aim for about 90 grams of lean protein a day when I'm trying to gain muscle and get lean.  I used to count and measure all my food but now I'm pretty good at estimating it.  If you want an easy way to track your calories, protein, carbs, and fat, try MyFitnessPal.com.  It's a free site and is very easy to use.

So, what are you doing to finish 2013 healthy and strong?

Happy Advent Season and a DIY Advent Calendar

Posted by whatsapp status on December 01, 2013 with No comments
Today starts the first Sunday of the Christian Season of Advent.  Today we began our count down to Jesus birthday.  I had actually never done an advent calendar with my girls, I know sad but my youngest keeps asking, "Are we at Christmas?"  "When are we going to Christmas?" etc.  I figured a calendar would be a good way to visually show her how long till Christmas day.  The whole calendar will symbolize the Christmas season.

I decided to make my own as I am not keen on giving them chocolates each day and I am also a picky chocolate eater and couldn't find one with dark chocolate.  The only problem with home-made, is that I am not a crafty person.  As you can see, it is really rather simple, but it works.  I like the idea of separate envelopes, as this way I could write my own notes, create my own activities and thus limit the edible treats.
In case you get the gumption to create your own, here are a few ideas I came up.

  • make paper snowflakes
  • decorate a Christmas ornament (set aside)
  • make a Christmas card for someone you love
  • make a paper chain
  • make a craft/bake for your teacher
  • do something for our neighbours
  • watch a Christmas movie
  • sing your favourite Christmas carol
  • have a candle light dinner
  • read a Christmas book
  • play a family game
  • colour Christmas pictures (printed and set aside)
  • give a treat (included in the pouch) to someone else
  • special activities for the advent candles of (hope, peace, joy and love)

Have fun with it.  If I can make my own you definitely can as well.  The girls did help me with making the board and are just thrilled with opening something each day.  I don't think they care what it looks like.
